A magnet makes a quick and easy adjustable cover plate. ;)
That's a great idea, Mike. Heck, he could even use those magnetic refrigerator magnets that look like business cards. I have one on my fridge right now from the electric company that says " Call before you dig" Dial 811.
I used a magnet business card size calender. It fit perfect over the combustion blower inlet and all I needed to do to adjust it was slide it just a bit. Worked great. :D

I know you all have been sitting on the edge of your seats wondering if I survived or turned into a human popsicle so I am offering this update.

I didn't freeze.
It took a lot of work to keep the furnace HOT but it was a lot better than in the past.
It was around 8 yesterday and -6 overnight.

Today, since it's warming up a little, it's easier to stay comfy.

I did not yet cut a hole in my door for a couple reasons.
Or just drill holes.

I just don't think drilling holes will do it.
I did some extremely rough calculations based on cracking the door 1/2"and the rough area to let air in
Assuming it's open 1/2" at the handle and -0- at the hinge, let's average 1/4".
I didn't measure the door but, let's say it's 12"/side X3
36X1/4"=9 Sq. in.
A 1" hole is only 3-1/8 sq. in. roughly.

I think I need more air than a hole will give me

As an aside, I have bought under 3 ton of coal for a cost od $240 and used @ 70 gallons of gas for @ $2 and, maybe 1/3 cord of wood (free except for the grunt and chainsaws).
This is from roughly the middle of November, to now.
Little under 3 months.
And I didn't use coal for a couple weeks due to warm weather and doing mods.

I'd say that I've had a qualified success.
Not smashing but a lot better

So Johnathan, were you just searching...for entertainment purposes? And came across this old post? I'll have to admit, there were times in the past, I responded to old posts too...not knowing they were "old posts".
