Any suggestions for a standalone email client? I don't even care if I have to pay for it.

Looking for something similar to the Outlook Express, I've tried Thunferbird before and it appears it hasn't been updated in ages and I didn't like it very much.

I found this, anyone using it?

I miss outlook express also, decided it was time to try thunderbird again. It actually isn't to bad once you customize it. Not much else out there!

You can install the 2009 version which is the last one that was like OE, I don't know if it works on 8 but it works on 7.

One of the problems is if you are using any of the other windows Essentials programs like Movie Maker. You have to uninstall Essentials to install the above file. It Includes Movie Maker and some of the other Essential programs but you can't update any of them because you have to update everything including the email client. That new email client sucks....

I have no specific reason but because of it's age I have concerns about security etc. Seeing TB was recently updated I downloaded it and it looks like it will work fine for what I need. Setup was pretty slick, it grabbed the information from the server instead of me having to manually add it. I only needed the email addy and password which then presented me with the options for IMAP etc.

I use Windows Live Mail that replaced Outlook Express. It works well and it can do more than OE could.

I think it's free from Microsoft here,

I just got new laptop with win 8.1 and tried to run the outlook webmail and it could not figure out the correct settings for Charter. I have given up on that and just downoloaded Thunderbird. It worked instantly.

Evolution is the cats meow in the Linux world, and there was a port to Windows a number of years ago, but I don't think the Windows port has been kept up to date.

I realize that this is an old thread but here goes.

A month ago I bought a new Win 10 computer to replace my 9 year old Win XP machine. I used Outlook Express on the XP for my email client and did not want to change over to any other email software. A deep search of the internet produced this site: http://runasxp.com

The site owner has created a Win 10 version of Outlook Express that appears to run in the command prompt mode but acts just like it's running in windows. After installation I easily transported all my Outlook Express files to the Win 10 version and even added the spell checker. You have to follow his instructions closely to get it working correctly and the site forum has plenty of help if you get into trouble.

The program is donation ware and he asks for a $10 minimum donation. I was so happy to get it I sent him more than the minimum.

I've been using Thunderbird for decades. Great e-mail client with an active add-on feature community. Latest release is: "Version 45.0, first offered to Release channel users on April 12, 2016"

Thunderbird also integrates well with GnuPG. GnuPG is a complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard as defined by RFC4880 (also known as PGP). GnuPG allows you to encrypt and sign your data and communication, features a versatile key management system as well as access modules for all kinds of public key directories.

For those of you that are concerned by our eroding Fourth Amendment Rights you should learn encryption techniques and secure e-mail communication. The combination of Thunderbird and GnuPG allows both.

Thunderbird or it's similar cousins are available for several Operating Systems. Highly recommended.
