Never ends does it? My 91 Sierra failed inspection last time for the gas cap. The NJ police State Inspection guy did try a few times. Not his fault. Due to budget cuts, they basically just do emissions anymore. For a while there, they had a vibrator machine in the floor that tried to blow your front end apart!

There is a GMC dealer near the Randolph, NJ inspection station so I went in there. Gas cap was $19 bucks. I would have been happy to pay it. They didn't have a '91 gas cap understandable. Ran around and got a Stant at Advance. $10 -ish.
I usually douse such rusty situations in Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. I think it used to have fish oil in it!
You can cut it 50% with paint thinner and then do a second coat. Helps for a while. I still like Rockauto.com. When I got a new gas tank for The Big Bopper, I painted it up good with Rusty Metal Primer. The rear end was really getting away from me too, the u-bolts and all that area. I just chipped and wire brushed away as best as possible and brushed it heavy. I better go out and see how it's holding up. :)
My '93 Ranger frequently kicks off the pump. In NJ you have to have a third world non-English speaking pump attendant pump your gas. I always say, "Sorry it always does that..."

Along these lines, EPA rules now demand that even 5 gallon gas cans have inoperable badly designed spouts! Go on Ebay and look at the prices of vintage gas cans!!!! The best design I ever saw is a Blitz brand that has a flexible spout that just pulls up out of the screw cap.

OMG don't even get me started on those damn EPA treehugger *censored* gas cans!!!!   Last time I tried to use one I almost pulled my .45 on it to fix it up good! Man, I'll tell you - the EPA could *censored* up a wet dream!! :bang:

Luckily I have a small stockpile of the pre-treehuggermania cans that I grabbed out of peoples recycling bins on my route in the city. So many people threw them away! But they also threw away lawn equipment that just needed fresh fuel. Ain't the smartest city on the planet ....

Damn, I hate those new gas cans with the lock. I usually break the lock so I don't have to try and hold it down, balance the can and not pour gas down my pants.

My wife picked up the other Stant gas cap, I'm going to give it a try. As soon as I told the company that I bought the neck from I wanted to return it the customer service Rep turned hostile, kept asking me, 'How did the neck "become" defective?' like I did something to it.

I was going to see if Rockauto had it, but couldn't remember their name nor the website. Lol

In fact, I just checked rock auto, they carry the same neck that I just bought. It's $40 more than what I paid.

Found the cap that fits this thing. Stant 10838. It would've been great if the site I bought the neck from knew what cap fit it; when asked, they gave me the wrong part number. I found the correct part number on a different website that was selling the same neck.

THE NECK IS IN!!

Man, as soon as I touched the old neck the vent tube collapsed. It was like rubber. I ended up just cutting the vent tube off to prevent cutting myself on it. I even made the new gas cap like the OEM one and managed to attach the tether to it.

The whole ordeal took about 20 minutes to get the old neck out and new one in. I had to use PB Blaster to get the hoses off though. I didn't want to cut them and risk them being too short when I put the new one in.

Looking at it, the fuel filler neck is exposed to the tire. So, as your driving the tire is kicking water, mud, gravel, road salt, sand up to it. The old neck wasn't painted like Smitty said, you can tell in the one picture with the end of the busted vent tube. But, if Chrysler had painted it then installed some sort of a dust shield the neck would've lasted the life of the vehicle. I may try to fabricate something out of plastic. I'm not entirely sure how well it's going to turn out. But, at least my CEL/MIL won't illuminate. Hopefully.

Praise the Lord--did you put the spray grease to the neck, door, hinges, anywhere it has some rust showing in that area that you can get to?

No, not yet. It started to rain almost immediately after I finished putting it in. But I'd have to do the entire frame. It's all rusted. LOL

Yep - I use a HPLV spray gun filled to the brim with used motor oil every season on all my equipment. Makes a mess but at least you get more than 2 years out of it before it starts rotting before your eyes.

Good deal IOF! That old one looks like my first season with a steel chimney pipe.

My neighbor has the exact same truck. I did one of the front fenders up on it 3 years ago. He had a few too many on New Years and a parked car jumped out in front of him. I hate when that happens ... But anyway, lots o rust to fight through on that job. What a mess. But now 3 years later, one fender looks great, and the other you could fit your leg through.

You can see how with Chrysler products, the minute you lose the paint, you get almost instant rust.

Damn. Glad my fenders and quarters don't look like that. Fred, don't fret, I'll be using some LPS-3 on it this week. I didn't do it yesterday because it was raining and where my truck is parked turns to mud.

[img][img][/img][/img]That is what mine looked like.I bought it a year ago,and the fuel drip is so bad I have to have a bucket and funnel. One day it completely fell to pieces.I didn't have the money to replace it right away,so I had to McGyver a contraption until I could get one.I'll get a picture of it tomorrow.I finally bought one for $90 I can't believe the cost, but I didn't want to get a used one living up North no telling the condition. So the auto part store ordered it.So now my question is How do I replace it. get someone else to do it...LOL.I can't afford that after dishing out almost $100 on a metal tube  :mad3:  .Plus I like to try to do things myself if I can get it figured out, being a girl I like to brag that I fixed it.
