I drained a little water from my boiler and it was nasty and blackish. Just wondering if I should drain out all the water and refill. Last year I added 2 cans of the Fernox boiler treatment.

Did you use the cleaning product, or the corrosion inhibitor?

Per the manufacturers information that black sludge is iron oxide (rust) that has been bound up by the chemicals. It also says you need to flush existing systems thoroughly.

Try their website for complete instructions,

I used the corrosion inhibitor. Yea looks like I should drain and flush the system out. Do I have to open all the radiators while flushing ? It has 19 radiators in 4 apartments so I will be running around a lot if I drain it 3-4 times.

If you read the instructions it said flush till it runs clear.

If you have a closed loop hydronic system, and if you have no leaks, and you never add new water , need you drain and flush your system?

No. Assuming you fill the system with good water to begin with, it becomes stable and does not need to be replaced. The problem is that lots of old systems are run with leaks, or nasty water, and end up needing to be cleaned/flushed when a new boiler is installed.
