Don't worry about mice or rats. Chickens are omnivores and will try to eat anything that doesn't try eat them.

The level of vermin you will or will not have all depends on how you manage the chickens feed and other supplies. Kind of like how much coal ash escapes from your stove.SWPaDon wrote:The chickens themselves don't, but the feed that is given to the chickens will as they never eat it all.

I didn't post on here about the gray squirrel that got in the chicken coop. The squirrel lived, but he lost a lot of blood and has never returned to my yard.tcalo wrote:Thanks for all the good info, I knew I can count on our great NEPA members for advice. I'll keep everyone posted!

Around here they have to be kept totally enclosed. A fisher cat gets to them and will kill them all in one night.

I had to do some quick reading on the fisher cat, as I had never heard of them. I'm glad we don't have them in Ohio.coaledsweat wrote:Around here they have to be kept totally enclosed. A fisher cat gets to them and will kill them all in one night.

We never had them in CT until the morons at DEEP decided it was an indigenous species and went north, brought some back and reintroduced them here. They reek havoc on pets and small animals. Nasty to look at and scary sounds in the woods like some one torturing children.
