Over the weekend I painted the little five tube 10 section and the flaming torch 12 section.

The casting is a little ruff on this one. It still looks pretty good though.

I went with the Hammerd Finish Gold on this one.

There is still 2 left to paint out of the ones that got sand blasted. I would like to get them in paint before rainy season starts.

1 more done!

This is the 10 section flaming torch radiator. I went with silver on this one. I don't care if silver is the worst color for releasing radiant heat, it looks cool.

I went with gloss Hunter Green for the last one.

It's the same color as the green on my Gentleman Janitor boiler. I had some left over.

Only one more radiator is going in the house. I've got to figure out what to do with the rest on them.

I guess I should keep a couple as spares, maybe put a couple in the basement. The Monster radiator I think I will just hook up in the garage since it's already there.

Here is my first floor radiator. It is in my bathroom in a room that measures 6X11.
It's a great towel warmer too. Would you believe this was headed for the scrapyard. They were tearing down an old bakery and this was in an office bathroom. I think it had 10 coats of paint on it maybe the old lead paint as well.
I had it sandblasted then I spray-painted it. The valve is original on the rt. side.
It works great and fits perfect in this smaller room.

It's great having a radiant heat source in the bathroom, isn't it? That's a nice compact radiator, thanks for saving it! We don't make cast iron radiators any more so every one should be saved.

That looks like a Five tube, 12 section, about 26" high. according to the Columbia Heating Guide,
http://www.columbiaheatingsupply.com/page_images/Sizing%20Cast%20Iron%20Radiator%20Heating%20Capacity%20Guide.pdf

It should put out 7,140 BTU at 180 degrees water temp. That should easily be enough for a bathroom.

Thanks!

I banged in another branch of PEX this weekend.

I managed to get the PEX run up there between the supply and return ducting. I hung it to the floor joists with tube-talons.

IMG_0345.JPG

The 3/4" PEX runs to the master bedroom (just above) with the two 3 column radiators and the 1/2" runs across to the left to a smaller bedroom where I put the five tube 10 section radiator.
IMG_0346.JPG
.JPG | 81.4KB | IMG_0346.JPG
At this end of the house I only have the bathroom PEX to run. On the other side of the house I have to run PEX to the dinning room radiator and I may run some to the kitchen for a small radiator in there. We'll see if we need it after it gets cold.

I will just do one per weekend and it will be done in plenty of time before Winter.

Don, there is no need for 3/4" pex to feed a single radiator. It will certainly work fine, but depending on the system design you might need to throttle some of the loops. Radiators actually put out less heat if the flow rate through them is too high - it disrupts the convection currents within the radiator.

I guess I wasn't considering 3/4" "big". Now that I think about it, the 1/2" PEX should be able to deliver the 12,750 BTU to those two radiators. The 1/2" just seems small! Real easy to work with though.

O.K., all the rest will be 1/2".

If you have a roll of 3/4", might as well use it. I was just pointing out that it may be overkill.

I bought a 300' roll of 1/2" and a 300' roll of 3/4". I will have enough to do the rest of the house with 1/2". That way I can save the 3/4" to plumb garage radiators.

I just quoted and got a job installing radiators in a house that was vandalized. The guy is buying the house and wanted radiators put back in. He needed 7 radiators.

The next block over a guy I know was tearing down a house that had...wait for it......7 radiators in it. I bought them for 50 apiece and he delivered them to the address for me. He thought he was only going to get about $25 as scrap value. The stubs to the floors are still in place. The vandals took the copper runs in the basement, copper off the boiler and took the radiators.

7 more radiators saved from the scrap pile. :)

Good deal on those radiators Larry. They are great fun to lug around too, especially up a flight off stairs.

Today I PEX'ed in the dinning room radiator.

One thing you have to take into account when installing these Danfoss thermostatic valves is, the valve has to be horizontal. The instructions say it will not operate if you install it vertically. This requires you to put in a street elbow and the hole in the floor is in a different spot than if it was a vertical mount. This might be a problem when swapping these into an existing system.
IMG_0386.JPG
.JPG | 72.1KB | IMG_0386.JPG
I also decided to put the 10 section flaming torch radiator down at the end of the hall. It's not plumbed in yet but it's pretty easy to bang in this 1/2" PEX.
IMG_0384.JPG
.JPG | 88.5KB | IMG_0384.JPG
The bath room will be the last to get radiator heat. I had thought of a lot of different ways to heat the bathroom and then a guy that I work with asks me, "Do you want another radiator?". I immediately said, "Yes!". This one is a wall mount radiator and that was what I was thinking I would like to have in there.

So, the bathroom will have this wall mount radiator spaced out about 2" or 3" so it can act as a towel warmer. I am also going to run the return off that radiator to some PEX clamped to the bathroom floor to get some floor radiant heat. That should be nice!
