Is there any reason I can't build my chimney rotated 45° from parallel to my walls. When the chimney passes through the roof a corner would be facing towards the roof peak.
AHS 260 is going in the garage, where the 16"x16" chimney passes through the metal roof I would have about 11' horizontally to the peak. So I will have about 7-8 ' of chimney protruding through the roof and 12' from roof to floor. If the chimney is rotated, I wouldn't have to build a roof cricket. I wouldn't have to worry about clearances for the thimble either.
Am I crazy for wanting to build it this way?

If I am understanding it right, you just want a corner of the block towards the wall instead of the face?
Based on how we built mine with the chimney blocks. I don't see why it would be a problem.
We used brick wall ties here and there, but the mason I worked with didn't seem to put much importance on them. I was putting in 2 per row per block for a while, and he told me I could ease up on them
I mixed the mortar and passed the blocks, he ran the show.

You're just rotating the entire chimney 45* top to bottom...
Not inducing a twist in the chimney...
You will make the carpenter work a bit more...
You could still build the cricket as it would be more effective...
Masons can do some crazy stuff with helixes in chimneys and big arches too..

That's is one heck of a nice look'in chimney!

I had a customer who built his chimney facing the house as normal. Only difference was; it was two, or three feet away. It was a free standing masonry chimney.
