I've seen this in other photos too. what makes the purple appearance in these photos?

I think some CCDs (Charge-coupled device, an electronic light sensor used in various devices including digital cameras) have a hard time interpreting the infrared radiation and it gets misrepresented as a purple hue on top of the orange.

Yes sir. Kimmels Nut. That was actually added over a 12 hour bit fire bed.
I started with bit because it starts easy and gets warm fast. Then the next morning I added the K-nut. It made a pretty exotic looking fire... :)

Nice pics gentlemen. I'm always trying to persuade my buddies to burn coal. Have a few interested. Beats wood into ashes hands down in every category.... ;)
