It doesnt really matter how much you are paid if your families bellies are full, bills are paid, and you are healthy and happy. Nothing else really matters.
Good for you Jpete. It doesnt sound like something Id want to do either.

Very true but it's also nice to be able to sock away for that eventual rainy day when you can't physically do the job anymore and wish to take it a little easier.warminmn wrote:It doesnt really matter how much you are paid if your families bellies are full, bills are paid, and you are healthy and happy. They matched the money without me saying a word.
Allegedly, they had intentions of grooming me to lead the commercial service department.
I never thought that far down the road but at some point it sure would be nice to not be crawling in hot attics
And as they said, if things don't change I can always leave.

I can't get on board with a corporate philosophy that says "any equipment over 10 years old is a sales opportunity. "
Or charging $800 for a half hours work and $25 worth of parts.

You not think????????????/ Hard to believe!! Negotiate Jeff. Now's the time--just think, in a supervisory roll, ya could get some of that inadequate work cleaned up!

2 summers ago I changed employers. I left restaurant cooking, cut throat and only the best-thick skin survive. The hourly pay was tops for the area and work as many hours you can work in 6 months...bread crumbs for 6 months. I took a pay cut and a part time cooking job in our local hospital, environment excellent, and the bennies are good. I have been full time since Sept., the pay is catching up and the hospital now serves the best food in town.

I'm aware you are digging at me but in all honesty, it's just not something I aspire to. I've been the supervisor before and I end up just doing it myself anyway.freetown fred wrote:You not think????????????/ Hard to believe!! Negotiate Jeff. Might work at home Jeff--but not work--you'd not be supervising or doing your job if ya let the slackers keep slackin--PLUS--why would they improve if they know you're gonna do it anyway. Make em earn their pay. That just good business.

of course they matched it...
They know good help is hard to find...
They never want to get ahead of the pay curve...
Too much too soon and then you get too expensive...
They want a flat curve...
Try to squeak some more money and/or training...
That way they have invested in you...
And if they don't change...
You have more skills to shop around...
Never stop learning!....
But if you can set the pace and the level of expectations...
You just might find a few more young ones like you...
Then you can sit back and reap your rewards...
I always like the new to job market...
in this state 14 yo with papers...
clean slate and no bad work habbits,,,

I trained a lot of kids in my day...
16 years worth...
about 25 per year with an average of 2 carrying over from the year before...
We had a blast every summer as it was a "Cape summer job"...
Always had a couple come back after a few years and thank me for the job training...
One from Westfield State on a scholarship from Mis'sippi...
Came back after getting her Law Degree and passing the boards...
Had my back turned when she walked in sayin'...
Bet you don't know who this is...
Still know that name today and will never forget the Westfield State Summer...
Had another smart one for four years...
Asked for a reference to REI an outdoors store...
She got it and a Manager actually called to follow-up on my letter...
Asked why they should hire her...
Said she would be a manager there in 3 years and be his boss in six!
She got hired...
The guy called me back after 2 years and said I was wrong...
She was managing a store after two years...

All well and good, but some are not meant to supervise. I have turned down opportunities in the past and would today. I am not a supervisor. I can teach and lead by example, but I have the same attitude about just doing it myself. And over 27 years building homes, we found 1 guy, and he is like me, can't supervise....
I would say take a chance jpete. If supervising doesn't work out, so what? It's not like you lose your ability to fix things....

Oh I hear ya...
Seasonal retail is way different than...
A year-round production/trade or professional type job in a large company...
But it was life compressed 10x...
so everything happened faster...
And if you ever need training on how to deal with customer service problems...
None better than Summer tourist retail...
I now work with much larger companies...
10-225 employees; $5-$25 million in revenue...
Different industries medical to construction...
And still I rely on those 16 years of summer retail to get me through...
because no matter what you do in life and work...
Ya still need the people skills...
Lucky for me I fell back into the computer technology field...
when it started to bloom...
and now that it is more of a commodity product...
I manage and maintain companies Information Technology...
