There is the one that just spins and the other that spins and you can pull in and out to shut the water off. I installed the one that just spins in my Grandmother's shower and this is not working out very well. Someone needs to help her so they can't slow the water rate or turn it off with simple push.
I obviously can't change the fitting but was hoping the fitting was the same for both versions. Anybody know?

Don't they make shower heads that really slow down water flow? Something the environmentalists came up with. (water saver) Just seems it would be a simpler/functional fix if I 'm following what you're lookin for???

There is two shower heads, this is aftermarket. The top shower head has a valve that will let you divert water to either head or both heads. She can't reach that but not a big deal as long as the idiot who uses the shower last remembers to put it back onto the handheld unit. Any water control valve would have to go on the hand held unit and that is going to be a little difficult to use especially for Gram. She has difficulty turning knobs, everything in the house now has levers.freetown fred wrote:Don't they make shower heads that really slow down water flow?
This is one of those "wish I had thought of this before" deals. If I had to do it over I would of plumbed diverter valve for the hand held unit she could easily use and put in the Moen valve you can pull and push for on/off.

If you have the model #, call MOEN at 800-289-6636. They can answer the question and even will mail replacement parts free of charge. They can also tell you how to determine the model #.
I doubt they are interchangeable, they may fit but won't work properly.

So is the issue the volume of flow? If so you should be able to find a lever valve to go on the hand held...Is that what your asking? Or are you trying to make a temp only valve into a temp/flow rate? If so thats a no go.

It's both the levelof flow and being able to shut it off easily. This one just spins, you turn it 3/4 and that is full hot, turn it back a little to adjust to desired temp. There is no flow control, it's either fully on or off and you have to turn it back 3/4 of turn to off.waldo lemieux wrote:So is the issue the volume of flow?
The other model you spin it left or right for the temp control. You pull it out to start water and the more you pull the faster it flows. One of the benefits is the temp adjustment is always set.
I'll have to go lok it up to see if it's same part number for the fitting. I actually have the cartridge from another valve.

Richard, what you are describing is a posi temp cartridge. The regular moen cartridge isn't interchangeable. The only way you'll be able to slow down the flow is with a little chrome inline ball valve they make for that purpose. I'm not a fan of the posi temp valves. If you're in the tub and you want to trickle a little hot water in to raise the temp, you can't do it. Dennis

The idea was to make it as easy for her to operate as possible, not having to pull on the valve is nice for her but I've fixed one problem and produced another.
There is diverter valve on the shower head that will allow you to use just the top shower head, just the lower shower head or both. I think at this point my best option is to look for different lower shower head with shut off valve or a valve that goes between the shower head and the hose.

you should be able to find one fits inline on the handle of the handheld. You mave have to loosen it up a bit so gram can operate it. If you cant find one of those I think FF has an army surplus valve in the barn and he can probably do some voodoo and get er cobbed on there for ya!

I have a 2 GPM shower head in my tub that has a built in shut off lever. I bought it a long time ago, so I can't help with any info. They do (or did) exist.Richard S. wrote: I think at this point my best option is to look for different lower shower head with shut off valve or a valve that goes between the shower head and the hose.

Yes they do. I have one thinking it would help my hot water last longer. I also had a wife and four daughters that complained bitterly that the "good for the environment" shower nozzle didn't rinse their hair well. Luckily, I have a drill that let the nozzle flow more,..... and then the complaints flowed less !freetown fred wrote:Don't they make shower heads that really slow down water flow? And yes, they make many shower nozzles, both head and handle types, with a shutoff lever or button built into the nozzle so that you don't need an expensive . I've had both and they are not much more cost then the plainer versions.

I'm well aware of the issues elderly people have with showers and bathtubs. I have a home health aid come in regularly to help my mom with her shower. I have a transfer seat for the tub and took the shower head off and replaced it with a hand held unit. So far no issues with the faucet, but when I renovated her bathroom I gave her the choice of the single-lever valve or the "old fashioned" separate hot and cold valves, she chose the separate valves.
For the longest while she was complaining about lack of hot water, I don't know what she was doing with the valves, I kept checking everything and it was fine. Since the health aid has been there the complaints vanished. Probably the same issue as the thermostat, she's constantly pushing it up when she feels cold and once the temperature reaches 80 she pushes it down to 60 and complains that it's too hot in there.
