How to Resize Images in Batches

  1. Single Image

    1. Download and install Irfanview which is a free image viewer/utility program.
    2. Open Irfanview and on the top menu click File>Open ... Find your file and select it.
    3. On the top menu click Image>Resize/Resample ... In the dialog make sure "Set New Size" and "Preserve Aspect Ratio" are selected. Under set new size type in 1000 in the width box (or whatever you prefer), the height will automatically be adjusted. Then click OK.
    4. ***This next step is important if you want to preserve your original high resolution images***On the top menu click File>Save As ... This will open the save as dialog box. To the right you'll find some selections for the type of image you are saving, if saving as a .jpg put the quality slider to 90%. Select a different location to save the image to.
  2. Doing a Batch or Multiple Images at Once
    1. Open Irfanview and on the top menu click File>Batch Conversion Rename which will open the batch conversion dialog box.
    2. On the very top left under "work As" make sure "Batch conversion" is selected.
    3. Below that under "Batch Conversion Settings" make sure "Use Advanced Options" is selected and click the button labeled "Advanced" which will open the conversion dialog box.
    4. Make sure "Resize" is checked, under resize select "Set long side too" and in the text box put 1200 and make sure pixels is selected next to that. There is three option below that named "Preserve aspect ratio", "Use resample function" and "Don't enlarge smaller images" ...they should all be checked. Click OK.
    5. Now back at the Conversion dialog box under "Output directory for result files" select a directory where you want the new images to be created.
    6. On the right hand side on the top navigate to the folder with the images you want to batch convert. Once you are in the directory with the images you can add them all for conversion at once by clicking "Add all". If you want to add only a few first click the imge in the top pane then click "Add", repeat for each imge you want to add.
    7. Click "Start Batch" and all the images you have selected will be converted.

One thing to always remember when working with images in an editor If you use "Save" you will overwrite the file you have opened. You should always keep a directory of your originals, right click the folder and select properties, "read only" which will prevent accidentally overwriting them. Always "Save As" to a different location. If you want to be absolutely safe make a copy of your image and open that with Irfanview to work on.

I usually am on line with my Work PC and cannot download Freeware..... so I discovered that if you have MS Office Picture Manager there is a compress feature located in the "Picture" pull down menu.

I have found this is very capable in compressing the pictures from my 5 megapixel camera (sorry about the 2.5meg pic I posted a few days ago in "Pictures of Your Stove"! . ).

My new digital camera produces file sizes around 2.0 MB, most are just over the limit, around 2.02. I'll try Richards suggestion to resize pictures.

Only reason I don't use the Microsoft product is I have developed a dislike for most of them. I can usually find a similar program by another company that works better, faster, and is easier to use. Case in point: Mozilla Firefox instead of I.E.

EDIT: Downloaded it and used it as per Richards directions. EASY!!!

Thanks.

I generally categorize my photos into a couple of main folders and inside that I have multiple folders

For example:

  • My Pictures
    • Family
      • Event 1 - date
      • Event 2 - date
      • Event 3 - date
      • etc......
    • Outdoors
      • Event 1 - date
      • Event 2 - date
      • Event 3 - date
      • etc......
    • Vacations
      • Event 1 - date
      • Event 2 - date
      • Event 3 - date
      • etc......

Now if you keep up on it you can add one more folder:

  • My Pictures
    • Family

      • Event 1 - date
        • Event1 resized
      • Event 2 - date
        • Event2 resized
      • Event 3 - date
        • Event3 resized
    • Outdoors
      • Event 1 - date
        • Event1 resized
      • Event 2 - date
        • Event2 resized
      • Event 3 - date
        • Event3 resized
    • Vacations
      • Event 1 - date
        • Event1 resized
      • Event 2 - date
        • Event2 resized
      • Event 3 - date
        • Event3 resized

Do them in batches when you download off the camera, only takes a few seconds and you have small images for emailing, uploading and other things.

I use the InfraView and it works goods, also Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.....

You can also reduce the image size on your camera before taking the pics, it depends on the settings, but you can set them for Web (Small), med, large or hi res, etc.....depending on your camera.
